Hour-long commute beyond hope of many

The Daily Telegraph’s recent list of the Top 10 commuter towns within an hour’s train ride of London underlines the gulf between house prices in London and the regions.
The only West Country town to make the Top Ten is Swindon.
But Helm Construction Contracts Director Jon Ticehurst believes the ‘One Hour Commute’ is a thing of the past wherever you live.
“It’s not a question of whether we are prepared to travel on our daily commute – many people don’t have a choice.
“We have people commuting across the Severn Bridge to our base north of Bristol as it’s quicker than coming in from other parts of the city. The average car journey from one side of Bristol to the other can take an hour or more on a good day.”
Jon Ticehurst said many people commuted to London Paddington from Chippenham, Bath, Bristol and even Weston-super-Mare.
“These locations are regarded by many as being within an acceptable commuting distance of London – and that acceptance is contributing in no small part to the rapid growth in house prices in these towns.”
