Neighbourhoods must have say on future housing direction

Housing Minister Dominic Raab’s announcement that local communities will have a greater shout in where homes should be built has been welcomed by Helm Construction.
Chief Executive Gary Sheppard said setting up neighbourhood plans in England could actually speed the planning process and accelerate delivery of new homes.
He said: “Planning applications can take years to bear fruit and if they had been drawn up in direct cooperation with the local people affected – rather than in spite of them as they are occasionally – could help settle any potential obections to a scheme before it goes before the planners.
The £23 million fund announced by the Government will give communities free access to expert advice on housing and construction and a say in what the proposed buildings should look like.
“We believe a great deal more can be achieved – in half the time – if all stakeholders are working together to bring a scheme forward, rather than creating division within communities and between homeowners and developers.”
